As The Flying V — beloved food truck-turned-South Bethlehem restaurant — learned this week, pronunciation can be difficult. Specifically, the difference between soft and hard vowels is proving to be exceptionally tough for some people, resulting in the association of Canadian cuisine with Russian politicians.
You might already see where we’re going with this. Inspired by a story from Food & Wine Magazine, The Flying V took to its Facebook page to clarify that poutine, a classic Canadian dish of fries, cheese curds and gravy, has no relation to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who recently launched an invasion of Ukraine.
According to the story from Food & Wine Magazine, poutine restaurants have been receiving calls full of insults and condemning them for supporting Russia. The confounding confusion is because in French, Putin is pronounced exactly like Poutine.
In a country with a large French-speaking population, that’s somewhat excusable… actually, that’s still a pretty ridiculous thing to think. But of course, it’s not much of a problem in the Lehigh Valley.
Still, that hasn’t stopped The Flying V using the opportunity to support Ukraine and its citizens.
As the restaurant announced on Facebook, the official name of their Classic Poutine menu item is being changed for this week to “F*CK Putin NOT Poutine.” On top of that, $1 from every purchase of a F*CK Putin NOT Poutine will be donated to the Ukrainian Red Cross, and the poutinerie will match the total at the end of the week.
This provides residents of the Lehigh Valley with a great two-for-one opportunity: supporting a nation in need and ordering an obscenity.
